Leonardo J. Velázquez, M.D.
Dr. Leonardo J. Velázquez, a board-certified Ophthalmologist, practices Comprehensive Ophthalmology at The Rhode Island Eye Institute, specializing in cataract surgery and diseases of the anterior segment, or front portion of the eye. He enjoys refractive cataract surgery incorporating presbyopia-correcting lenses as well as lenses and techniques to reduce astigmatism. Dr.Velázquez has a special interest in glaucoma, having co-authored a number of publications on the early detection of glaucoma. Before joining The Rhode Island Eye Institute, he worked for Eye Health Vision Centers in Dartmouth Massachusetts for nine years.
Dr.Velázquez graduated Cum Laude from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and received his medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine. He went on to complete a glaucoma research fellowship at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, and his residency at The University of Texas-Houston Medical School.
Dr.Velázquez is fluent in Spanish, as he was born and raised in Puerto Rico.
